Kanami Okabayashi

September 26, 1939 - August 09, 2017

Beloved Mother and Grandmother

Kanami (Handa) Okabayashi, age 77, passed away Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital surrounded by the comfort of her loving family. She was the daughter of the late Keimei Handa and Ko Yamaki Handa.

Kanami was born on September 26, 1939 on the Island of Sakhalin, above Hokkaido, Japan. When Japan lost the island to Russia in the last World War, they became refugees and returned to Hokkaido, Japan. She was educated and graduated college in Japan and then married her late husband Shigeru Okabayashi on March 13, 1962. She came to the United States on November 22, 1963, with her newborn daughter and lived in Queens, NYC for a few years before moving to Brockton, then Foxborough. Kanami was a long-time Foxborough resident and was employed as a florist for Pat’s Flowers in Raynham and Judy’s Village Florist in Foxborough. She always loved flowers and gardening. Kanami was a member of the Bethany Congregational Church in Foxborough. She regularly assisted in the community dinners for the homeless held once a month there. Another member once described her as having a servant's heart. She was generous and often sacrificed her own needs for the needs of others. She enjoyed being a member of the church knitting club and was a former church choir member. She loved music and at one point, was a member of a Japanese National Choir when she was in Japan for a few years. She enjoyed playing the piano and attended nearly every concert of her grandsons' at the Ahern Middle School and the Foxborough High School for the last 6 years. Aside from gardening, she also loved travelling, painting, pottery, sewing and cooking. She recently had a painting shown in the Attleboro Art Museum. She enjoyed almost anything creative and had an eye for color. Most of all, though, she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Beloved wife of the late Shigeru Okabayashi. Devoted mother of Mimi Foley and her husband John of Foxborough. Loving grandmother of Noah and Michael Foley, both of Foxborough. Sister of Megumi Powell of SC. She will be sorely missed by her family.
